Words cannot express my outrage at the desecration of the relics of the New Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna as described by a priest in the Holy Land. The mafia style operation conducted by the Moscow Patriarchate representatives to achieve their wicked and impious aim is shocking. Is anyone still surprised at how far the ROCOR Synod of Bishops has moved towards annexation?

The following speaks for itself. Moscow Interfax/Religion, 28 August 2008, reported that Mr. Vladimir Resin, First Deputy Mayor of Moscow, announced at a press conference that the reconstruction of the Martha-and-Mary Convent in Moscow had been completed, adding: “Thus, another tourist destination has been added in Moscow, and Muscovites and visitors can come here and take pleasure in the beauty of this place”.

The more true intents are unmasked, the more it is imperative for us to gather around and support His Eminence, Metropolitan Agafangel and the Synod of Bishops of The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad . Can we remain silent and passive when such an iniquity is perpetrated in the Gethsemane convent despite the strong protests of its Abbess and Nuns? They managed to protect St. Elizabeth's head which was demanded by Moscow but had to surrender a part of the arm and they had to watch it being broken away by the emissaries of a State that calls itself Christian.

Therefore I do not hesitate to voice my indignation and my revulsion at this act of sacrilege committed by persons who treat holy relics as "valuables" to be grabbed and confiscated for the benefit of a "tourist destination".

DOCUMENT: The desecration of the relics of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna in Jerusalem. An open letter первоиерарху RPTSZ MT Metropolitan Hilarion

Portal-Credo.ru:

The Desecration of the Relics of the
Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna in Jerusalem.

An Open Letter to the ROCOR(MP) Hierarch Metropolitan Hilarion.

With sorrow in my soul, I nonetheless decided to describe what I witnessed at the Gethsemane Convent on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The Abbess of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow, Natalya Moliboga, flew into Jerusalem in the first week of June, 2009. She met with Hegumena Elizabeth, the Abbess of the Gethsemane Convent. She has tried in the past to convince the Hegumena to give her a large number of relics of Elizabeth Feodorovna for the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow, explaining that the Mayor of Moscow, Yuriy Luzhkov, has demanded to take all of the relics of Elizabeth Feodorovna.

In the middle of June, Yekaterina suddenly arrived in Jerusalem by private jet. She is a close friend of Patriarch Kirill and the former wife of the Russian oligarch Vasiliy Anisimov. She claims the Patriarch is her spiritual father. Bishop Mikhail (Donskov) of Geneva arrived with her in the plane. He declared that as a bishop of the ROCOR(MP), he has a blessing from Archbishop Mark (Arendt) of Berlin and Germany, who cares for the Russian convents in the Holy Land, to transfer a significant part of the relics of Elizabeth Feodorovna to the nuns of the convent. All attempts by Hegumena Elizabeth to contact Archbishop Mark were unsuccessful. He would later say that “unknown forces” disconnected his cell phone and he was unable to use it for five days.

The two demanded that they be given the head of the martyred Saint Elizabeth Feodorovna. The Hegumena and the nuns categorically refused to fulfill this demand. Bishop Mikhail (Donskov) insisted that since he had received the blessing of Archbishop Mark, they should voluntarily give what is asked to avoid any conflicts with Mayor Luzhkov. Yekaterina Anisimova also insisted that transferring the relics was a personal request of the Patriarch. The most amazing thing was that neither Bishop Mikhail nor Anisimova could provide Hegumena Elizabeth any document or letter signed by Mayor Luzhkov, Patriarch Kirill, or at least Archbishop Mark.

After many hours of heated and harsh negotiations, Hegumena Elizabeth eventually did agree to let them have a piece of Elizabeth Feodorovna’s arm, on the condition of a written agreement, which was drafted and signed. The agreement states that no one from the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent or any representative of the Moscow Patriarchate will ever again request all or any part of the relics of the Grand Duchess. The agreement also states that this matter will never be discussed again.

The visitors kept saying that Mayor Luzhkov will continue to use any means he can to transfer all of the relics of Elizabeth Feodorovna to Moscow. They said that he has all the necessary paperwork. When asked by the nuns how Bishop Mikhail happened to arrive in the plane with this delegation, he answered that they “just happened to meet me in Rome and took me along.” It was an unbelievable tragedy for those nuns who were present and witnessed to see how the piece of the forearm was broken off and taken away as the agreed-upon relic. The situation was so tense, that it seemed a major uproar would break out. It was very difficult for the nuns to remain calm. Outside the walls of the Gethsemane Convent, three black Mercedes waited and the delegation later got in and left with the relic piece. Along the way to the airport, they were joined by the Abbess of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, Natalya Moliboga, who had remained hidden in the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission the whole week in anticipation of these events.

It is well known that the centennial of the founding of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow will be celebrated in September of this year. One of my spiritual daughters, who had been in Moscow, told me that a crypt for the relics of the Grand Duchess has already been prepared in the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent. Apparently, it contains the vestments of the Grand Duchess and her pectoral cross. Even though it is known that these items were not on her, when Sokolov, the investigator, exhumed the body of Grand Duchess from the mineshaft near Alapaevsk. My calls to the bishops of the ROCOR(MP) were not answered. I hope that the Hierarch of the ROCOR(MP), Metropolitan Hilarion, will still reply to these unfortunate events, though these hopes are fading. I believe that a desecration of the relics of Elizabeth Feodorovna has occurred on the eve of the celebration of centennial of the founding of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, and that it can be compared only to her murder in 1918.

Sadness and outrage - appropriate responses in a Christian heart. The R0C0R-MP priest who wrote this letter does not belong in the MP. He is one of us. I hope he finds his way out.

For your information. Irina Bagration

" The first day of the dean’s visit began with a visit to the Martha and Mary Convent in Moscow, founded by the New martyr Elizaveta Feodorovna. Protodeacon Vladimir (Tsurikov) met with Natalia А. Moliboga, in charge of the convent, and was given a thorough tour of the convent, including the convent’s museum. An agreement was reached, according to which Holy Trinity Seminary will display ....."

Your translation : "The Abbess of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent in Moscow, Natalya Moliboga, flew into Jerusalem in the first week of June.."

"in charge" does not mean she is the abbess. I am sure Fr. Vladimir Tsurikov would have called her abbess if she were abbess. Interfax calls her "nachalnitsa" (from "nachalnik: chief, director, in command , boss etc.)

We have to admit that MP is not entirely to blame. The nuns DID succumb to the pressure and entered into a compromise, thus participating in the desecration of the relics.

It isn't the first time R0C0R[MP} yielded to pressure from MP and thereby tearing something holy into pieces.

Evlogia Kyriou. Gospod' Blagoslovit! May God bless you.

I once said that 50% of what I read on the Internet I consider to be hogwash, another 25% misrepresentations based on lies and distortions, and the remainder, except for a small percentage, subject to doubt.

Several years ago, when I was speaking at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute on the state of Orthodoxy in the world today, during the intermission one of the students asked me about certain Orthodox websites on the Internet. I commented on a number of the false and misleading statements from various of these, at the same time trying to be fair and objective.

In the end, my questioner said, "Quite obviously, as is generally the case, what one reads about Orthodoxy on the Internet is not very reliable." I then repeated what I said in the first paragraph. This woman, a diplomat being retrained for a new assignment in an Orthodox country said," Please forgive me if I differ with you. Your statistics show a great deal more faith in the Internet than one should actually have."

In view of my own doubts, which have been reinforced not only by this incident in Washington, DC, but in many other cases, I would be the last to put much faith in the Internet. Thus, in reading the following report, I am keeping an open mind. The report openly states that the information available on the Internet is not reliable. That causes me to be cautious.

However, since this report is not signed by the Abbess of the Convent, I am left with some lingering suspicions, given the deep distrust I have of any information coming from an official body in an former Communist country. (And I say that with a good deal of personal experience behind me, and not with any ecclesiastical or political axe to grind.) I have heard from sources other than the Internet that the Sisters at Gethsemane are not happy with their situation vis-a-vis Moscow.

If anyone has reliable and trustworthy information about this situation, I think that it would be useful to establish either that the Convent in Gethsemane is, in fact, supportive of the transfer of parts of the Relics of St. Elizabeth to Moscow, or, indeed, that the negative reactions and quite different stories that we have all read are accurate. I am happy to accept whatever is factual.

It behooves us, whatever our personal views, to see that the information on which we form our reactions is honest, reliable, and straightforward. If only on account of our deep veneration for St.
Elizabeth, to whom the convent here in Etna is dedicated, this matter interests me and others in our brotherhood.

ST ELIZABETH THE GRAND DUCHESS’ RELICS

AT THE BEGINNING of August, Portal-Credo.ru published an Open Letter to “the ROCOR(MP) Hierarch Metropolitan Hilarion,” purporting to be from a priest of that jurisdiction in the Holy Land. The anonymous writer claimed to have been the witness of sad events at the Gethsemane Convent in the Holy Land when portions of relics of St Elizabeth the New Martyr were unceremoniously taken to be transferred to the “Marfo-Mariinsky Convent” in Moscow. A delegation from Moscow was alleged to have arrived at Gethsemane, accompanied by Bishop Michael of Geneva, and demanded the surrender of these relics. It was alleged that attempts to contact Archbishop Mark, who is responsible for the ROCA-MP holdings in Israel, were unsuccessful because “‘unknown forces’ disconnected his cell phone.” The impression given was that the relics were, to all intents and purposes, snatched without proper ceremony or proper procedure. The Head of the ROCA Mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Ioasaph, has since written a letter explaining that the ROCA-MP Synod had given a blessing for this gift, that the relics were properly separated when Archbishop Mark was in Jerusalem for the Ascension (15th / 28th May) and placed in temporary reliquaries, and were taken to Russia before the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent so that permanent reliquaries could be accurately prepared. He writes; “Everything that happened took place with the explicit blessing of, and at the request of, Archbishop Mark.” A private letter from one of the sisters of the Convent confirms this version of events in most respects. On 21st August, the ROCA-MP website published a statement also confirming this; this was headed “from the Nuns of Gethsemane,” but was not attributed to the Abbess and was itself otherwise anonymous. What remains something of a mystery is where the Portal Credo-ru story originated, and perhaps more pertinently why the ROCA-MP Synodal decision to donate portions of the relics to Moscow was not widely published at the time it was reached, and why no mention of the transfer was made on their official website for three months after the dividing of the relics, especially in view of the widespread concern that the allegations in the anonymous letter had raised among the faithful. Matters of much less import appear on their website every few days. People loyal to the Synod of Metropolitan Hilarion, and close to him personally, whom we contacted in attempting (unsuccessfully at the time) to ascertain the veracity of the Open Letter, had no idea that a portion of the relics were to be presented to the Moscow Convent. One might have thought it would have been bruited abroad as one more evidence of the accord which the rapprochement of 2007 has brought about; instead, oddly, it seems to have been kept secret.
