The modern Moscow Patriarchate reminds me of the Renaissance Papacy -- opulence, political and social prestige, a predilection for gilded ornamentation, and lots of cloaks and daggers whirling behind the scenes. And what of the blazhenie-- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven?" In contrast, St. John of Kronstadt ministered unto the Tsars of Holy Russia, but lived in relative poverty, even at the height of his considerable fame.
