MP Awards Medals to Fidel and Raoul Castro

RIA Novosti reports Cuban leader Fidel Castro and his brother Raoul received medals on October 20, 2008, from the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Chairman of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Kirill, heading a church delegation, met with the Cuban government on the occasion of the "Days of Russian Culture in Latin America" and gave Raoul Castro the medals and certificates signed by Patriarch Alexy II.

Raoul Castro was awarded with the Order of Blessed St. Daniel, Prince of Moscow, First Degree, "in recognition of his help in the construction of the Kazan church in Havana." Fidel Castro received the more prestigious Order of "Glory and Honor" "in recognition of his efforts to strengthen interreligious cooperation in connection with the consecration of the Our Lady Of Kazan Church in the city of Havana."

As a reminder, Metropolitan Kirill consecrated the Our Lady Of Kazan Church in Havana on October 19. The agreement to build the church was reached in November, 2004, after a meeting of the metropolitan with Fidel Castro. The Cuban government provided the majority of the funds for the construction of the church.
